My review of this book:
As the wife of a football lover I was anxious to read this book. I was instantly drawn into this book by the stories from those mentioned in the book. My favorite part of this book is when the author shares a story from Mike Singletary, former Chicago Bears middle linebacker. Singletary recalls the struggle he felt with being a Christian and yet deliberately harming other players. He shares that he was considering leaving the game, stating “… Singletary found himself at a crossroads: Could he be the Christian he aspired to be and still play the game he loved? (Echelberger, 2012, p. 27) He shares that ultimately he felt it was his job to be the best he could be at the job God put in-front of him, and shares Psalm 139 as the chapter that helped him make this choice.
This entire book is an amazing account of faith throughout the sport of football. In another part, the author shares a story from Matt Hasselbeck. Hasselbeck shares that for much of his early career in the NFL he was met with negative attitudes toward Christians from coaches and other players. He shares that it wasn’t until he was drafted to the Green Bay Packers in 1998 that he found a group of men that were strong in their faith and showed him that Christians could be competitive and still be Godly and love their opponents.
I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys football and is looking for Godly role models.
